What are Paint Grades?

Paint Grades come in 3 varieties. For now lets look at Benjamin Moore’s product line up.

The high-grade option is found in their Regal Select line up. You’ll pay a bit more per gallon, however you are paying for extra durability. Especially in the matte finishes. They also feature the “ulti-matte” which produces low sheen while retaining wipe-ability. Regal is often stated to be easier to apply, which is to be expected because regal used to be their top of the line. Step back regal, theres a new player in the game.

The super premium grade features the one and only Aura collection. This grade of paint holds several advantages over the others. First, by further enhancing its durability for all finishes. Second, by providing excellent coverage that requires less coats to hide that old color. Finally to top it all off, increased moisture and mildew resistance. This makes choosing the right paint simple. Making this the go-to option for areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and indoor pools.

What are paint finishes? | Why is paint glossy?

The terms finish and sheen can be used interchangeably as they both stand for the shiny-ness of the paint. Sheen all depends on the amount of resin used in the paint. More resin means more shine and more binding material. More binding material increases paint durability, with the added bonus of better coverage to hide whats underneath. With all of these benefits, there must be a drawback right? To start, resin is expensive and better paints use higher quality resin. So high gloss paints in high-end or super premium line-ups tend to break $30 a gallon! Because of this, many consumers prefer to get a semi-gloss finish as it provides many of the same qualities without breaking the bank.

Do you really need primer before you paint drywall? | How to choose paint primer for drywall

Do you really need paint primer before you paint drywall? This really depends on the condition of the surface you want to paint. Drywall surfaces tend to be roughly textured and are very porous. These pores act like a sponge. If you painted drywall without primer, the outcome would be blotchy, spotted, and uneven. Resulting in you wasting more paint. It is critical to fill these pores to prevent moisture retention, oil and odor build up. When painting over spackle spots, make sure the surface is sanded down smooth and wiped clean. When spackle spots show through, we refer to this as flashing. Priming allows us to smooth out and fill in any gaps and pores that can be found. Producing a professional smooth look.

So, how do you choose paint primer for drywall? Well, Sherwin Williams has released a specialty dry-wall primer to prepare this surface for a more even finish on future paints. Multi-purpose primer can also get the job done. PVA primer, or polyvinyl acetate, is also a great option for dry-wall and tend to be contractor friendly for competitive pricing on large amounts.

Surfaces that need primer | Which primer do I need?

Raw wood

Which surfaces need primer before painting? Raw wood is a great starting point. Surfaces like raw wood are porous, meaning they have millions of nooks and crannies to retain moisture. These pores must be filled to get the smoothest possible finish, and to prevent mildew, moisture, oil, and odor build up. You will often see raw wood in window framing, new solid wood doors, and trim. For these situations, Sherwin Williams has created a wood and wall primer. They make one of the best latex primers in the market.

Polyurethane Stained Surfaces

Another surface that requires primer is polyurethane coated surfaces. Polyurethane is very durable, and long lasting. Even on high traffic areas, it can last from 3 to 6 years. Because of this, untouched and well preserved polyurethane surfaces tend to be more difficult to cover and repaint. So, which primer do I need to cover polyurethane? Shellac or oil based primer is recommended. If not you’ll have bleed through, and adhesion issues.

Oil Stained Surfaces

Oil stained trim tends to be difficult to simply cover with paint. You will find it very easy to accidentally scrape paint off. Thats because when latex paint dries on top of oil based paint or stain, it cannot adhere correctly. Without an oil based or shellac primer, paint will easily fall off. Bin shellac based primer by Zinsser is a wonderful product that works great for interior uses. However, they do not recommend using this for large exterior needs. For one of the best exterior primers, Zinsser also makes Cover Stain oil based primer which will work much better for your exterior needs.

Water Damage | Smoke Damage | Grime

Home surfaces go through a lot of wear and tear. The longer a home goes without a new coat of paint, the more grime, smoke, and water damage builds up. Smoking indoors causes build up of soot on walls and ceilings. Even lighting candles often enough can cause smoke damage. Water damage can be found after flooding or when a damaged roof allows leaks into the home. These surfaces need to be prepared properly before painting over them. Some grime spots and smoke damage leave residues that show through paint. Generally, cleaning these surfaces proves to be quite difficult. Making thick primer the best option. So, which primer do I need for stained surfaces? Shellac based primer will be your best bet. This will provide the best results in hiding those nasty stains. Kilz oil based spray primer is great for patch jobs and stains with a small footprint.
